Guest Speaker Steven Z. Pavletic, MD, MS
Guest speaker at the event is Dr. Steven Z. Pavletic, M.D, M.S., Head, Graft-versus-Host and Autoimmunity Unit, Experimental Transplantation and Immunology Branch of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in Bethesda, Maryland. He also has an adjunct investigator appointment at the Medical Oncology Branch of the National Cancer Institute and the National Institute for Arthritis and Rheumatism.

Dr. Pavletic’s primary research is in the field of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for hematologic malignancies, chronic graft-versus-host disease and transplantation for autoimmune disease. At the National Institute of Health (NIH), he was instrumental in founding the National Marrow Donor Program sponsored transplant program.

He has published more than 130 articles in peer-reviewed journals, and is co-editor of the first textbook on chronic GVHD. In October 2006, Dr. Pavletic received the NCI director’s individual merit award for his achievements in developing national and international consensus guidelines for clinical trials in chronic GVHD.

Dr. Pavletic received his medical degree and internal medicine training from the Zagreb University School of Medicine in Croatia. He completed additional training in internal medicine and oncology/hematology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. Dr. Pavletic was the only house officer in his class to be inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha national medical honor society.

He completed clinical fellowship in bone marrow transplantation in the Clinical Research Division of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the Oncology Division of the University of Washington Medical School, Seattle, Washington. Until October of 2002, Dr. Pavletic was the Director of the Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation program at the University of Nebraska in Omaha.

Dr. Pavletic maintains ties with numerous national and international professional societies, collaborative networks, committees, advisory, monitoring and editorial boards, including the ex officio seat on the Bone Marrow Transplant CTN steering committee. He is the co-chair of the NIH Chronic GVHD Consensus Project.

From 2004-2010, he served as the co-chair of the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplantation Research (CIBMTR) GVHD Committee, and since 2010, he has chaired the Autoimmune Disease Committee of the CIBMTR. Dr. Pavletic also co-chairs the epidemiology committee of the recently established NCI workshop on the treatment of malignancy relapse after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. He considers his participation in the patient and research advocacy and support groups as advisor, consultant and presenter one of his top priorities.
